The Research Operations Assessment answers both.

We talk with the people doing the work — faculty, postdocs, graduate students, and center staff. We map where friction in how work gets planned, coordinated, and executed is costing time, momentum, and clarity. Then we deliver a written findings report and a structured debrief that gives the RD office and center leadership a shared, honest picture of the problem and a clear set of options for addressing it.

Scope note: we focus specifically on research workflow and project execution — how work gets sequenced, how teams align across disciplines, and how direction gets communicated when the path is still being defined. We do not assess financial systems, compliance processes, data management infrastructure, or administrative operations.

Working directly alongside the research team, HL Dynamics leads the collaborative design and build of research workflows — project execution structures, cross-functional alignment tools, and the operational scaffolding that helps teams move with intention even as the science evolves.

This isn’t a consulting engagement where we observe and report back. We’re present in working sessions, building in real time alongside the people who will use what gets built. At the close of the engagement, the workflows belong entirely to your team — shaped by them, owned by them, sustained by them.

What gets built varies by center. It typically includes

  • Project execution structures adapted to the realities of research
  • Cross-functional alignment and communication frameworks
  • Decision-making processes that hold up under uncertainty
  • Onboarding documentation so new team members inherit the system, not the chaos

Engagements are structured with the RD office as the contracting partner, with delivery at the lab and research center level. Funding typically aligns with leadership development budgets, faculty support funding, or indirect cost structures depending on your institution.

How Engagements Typically Unfold

Most teams start with the Assessment. It gives everyone — the RD office, center leadership, and faculty — a shared picture of the problem before any implementation begins. It also gives center leadership something concrete to bring to their VP of Research.

From there, many teams move into an Embedded implementation engagement. Some don’t — and that’s fine. The Assessment stands on its own as a useful, actionable deliverable regardless of what comes next.
